Subject: Japanese PDFs -- a summary

I was having mega problems producing Japanese language PDFs of large manuals, until I received lots of excellent advice from the usual suspects (Dina Davidson, Dmitri Yunov, Dick Gaskill, Michael [the dead chook] Richards, and, especially, Steve Schwedland. I had three major problems: 1. PDFs produced using Dov's recommended setup couldn't be viewed on a non-Japanese o/s; 2.PDFs produced using a HP 4Si/4SiMX PS (which can be opened on any o/s) were too big to ftp to our Singapore printers; and 3. after applying all the recommendations, I kept getting the out-of-virtual-memory kill message. 1. Was easy -- accept the inevitable and produce online PDFs only for Japanese Windows. (with download all fonts as Type 42). PDF sizes are about 7 Mb 2. Ended up producing very large .PDFs using the HP driver, but split book into 3 parts and zipped the PDFs. Final size before zipping is about; after zipping is 3. Was very interesting, but Steve Schwedland supplied a fix (he sent me a file called LowVM.ps which I placed in my ..\Acrobat3\Distiller\Startup directory; and which Distiller loaded next time I opened it). Don't know who owns the rights to this little gem, so you may need to ask Stevo (Schwedland, Steve [Steve.Schwedland@corp.sykes.com]). Ta all, and back to work.
