Re: ATM install question from f2a member

Peter,

I am copying three lists because I think they should see your question
and the response.

It is absolutely NOT true that “FM requires ATM.” No such requirement is
stated for the product. Windows 2000 and XP each support Type 1 fonts,
TrueType fonts, and OpenType fonts for installation, display, and print.
Windows 2000 and XP do NOT support Multiple Master Type 1 font instances.
If you still use such fonts, you must install ATM Lite 4.1 (not any earlier
version) on Windows 2000 or XP to get support for this format. Otherwise,
ATM Lite serves no real purpose under Windows 2000 or XP.

You indicated that you “heard XP Pro has its own font management.” Likewise,
this is not true. It supports simple installation into a flat directory
structure as well as display and print, but not “management.” Font management
implies the ability to organize your fonts in groups and to selectively
enable or disable single fonts and/or groups of fonts. Such capabilities
are not native to any version of Windows or the Macintosh. Under Windows 2000 or
XP, you still must use a font manager for such sophistication. ATM Deluxe 4.1
provides such services (as well as the Multiple Master services) under
Windows 2000/XP.
