It takes a significant amount of time to build, but not an hour. One thing I've noticed while building that book, using an AppleScript, is that the first so-many files come in very quickly. As the size of the book grows, so does the amount of time it takes to add a file. It seems like there used to be a way of freezing a display so a script or FDK client could do its thing without having to wait on Frame to update the display. Maybe using an external Perl script to build the book (MIF) would go faster, but that wouldn't solve the problem of long opening times.
