RE: Printer Crash: Query

Thanks, Dov. The scenario you describe sounds about right. It's certainly
consistent with the manner in which everything else is administered here.
The Lexmark drivers are supplied from NT to our W2K boxes. For Distilling, I
have downloaded my own driver from the Adobe site and configured it with the
recommended PPD file. But, since IS can write directly to our desktop, and
DO, they have repeatedly blown away the department Adobe drivers in the
past. Their "configuration" assumes a boilerplate desktop; anything I do
that is anomalous, such as downloading the Adobe drivers for the Adobe
product, is considered taboo and not worthy of "support." Sigh.

Unfortunately, I see corporate computing becoming more and more of a "top
down" affair for Windows users....Flexibility is going out the window... as
it were. Must be nice for the IS folks.

Thanks for the help with this problem.

Colin

Colin,

You can and normally will have multiple PostScript devices (including
the Distiller) driven by a single driver, differing only in terms of
the PPD and user-selected options associated with each of the printers.

Quite frankly, it is very hard to remotely diagnose how your IS folks
screwed your system up. I know of dozens of ways. One way is to provide
print spooling services to Windows 2000 and XP users from a Windows NT 4
system, in which case the NT 4 sends its drivers to you for your use.
Bad, bad, bad, bad! But there are other scenarios, also. Again, without
hands on your system, further speculation is useless.
