Embedding Character Format in Autonumber string

I recall that in 5.x versions, you were able to embed character formats
within autonumbering strings, so you'd end up being able to change formats
within the strings.

However, in 6.0, that doesn't seem to be possible. Instead of embedding the
format in the string, the format is applied to the whole string.

Has anyone found a way to do this in 6.0 (Windows)?
