I am working with Illustrator and FrameMaker on Mac: I don't have Photoshop, and it would be horrendous overkill to buy such an expensive package for such a trivial operation as file format conversion.

Sorry, but I wasn't calling you or inferring that you were crazy.
Perhaps I wouldn't have been as judgmental about the workflow
if you added the step about having to go between two computers
on two different platforms.

Yes, technically there is a problem with it unless you are
exceptionally careful to output only the part of the Illustrator
document that has the image AND to match the output resolution exactly
with the resolution of the input document. Otherwise you may get
strange artifacts.
