Re: Weird Adobe PDF docs

Thomas,

Nothing is wrong with the document, nothing is wrong with
Windows 2000 SP1, nothing is wrong with Acrobat. What is
wrong is the "LaserJet 4050".

The PDF file in question was created by exporting PDF
from InDesign. The PDF exported by InDesign uses CID-encoded
Type 1 and Type 42 fonts. Recent vintage Hewlett-Packard
LaserJets (all four digit number versions except the 8500
and 8550 color devices which use EFI RIPs with Adobe
PostScript 3) use an "emulation" of PostScript Level 2
that has had its share of "anomalies" including problems
with CID-encoded fonts.

Supposedly, these problems have been fixed with the
LaserJet 4100. We have heard from some end-users, but
cannot independently verify this, that if you run into
these problems and get the "right" folk at Hewlett-Packard
Technical Support, they will ship you an upgraded set
of ROMs that contain the fixes for older LaserJet 4xxx,
5xxx, 80xx, and 81xx models. You might need to go through
a few levels of HP Tech Support before you reach someone
who (a) understands this problem and (b) is able and willing
to authorize the update for you.
