RE: Ghost of missing fonts mystery

Hey Deb--

Things I've run into while trying to exterminate unwanted fonts...

Some Frame plug-ins create hidden stuff on master or reference pages, and
those may use unwanted fonts.

Variant names of the old fonts sometimes cause problems. For example, to
completely eliminate Times, you also want to eliminate Times-Roman,
W.Times.R, and probably everything else with Times in the name.

When fixing stuff in MIF, remember the FontFamily settings that go with each
font setting.

If files have tables in them, each table definition probably re-creates para
and char formats. Unless you kill ALL of those, you can still get missing
fonts messages. Sometimes you have to re-create those tables from scratch
and completely delete the old tables.

Some para formats use bullets or whatnot from a particular char format...
and if that char format includes the unwanted font, you can get missing font
messages and Frame can't find any instances of said font.

Other stuff that comes to mind -- I don't know if all of these cause
problems, but what if:
- A file specifies a TrueType font when its PostScript variant is on your
machine (or vice versa).
- The print settings specify substitution with a printer font, and the font
in question is not installed on the printer.
- The font substitution settings in the maker.ini file specify a font that
isn't on your system.
- There are formats that use unavailable fonts, but those formats aren't in
the catalogs.
- Some formats have overrides that use unavailable fonts.

BTW, we've seen font problems in various programs with OS 9.x when it's
being run as "classic mode" from under OS X.
