A third option (which is the one I'm currently using), is to get a
font with the desired symbols/icons in it, and use that font for the
autonumbering portion of the paragraph.
The disadvantage is that you then can't autonumber the paragraph with
numbers, so if you need that, then I would definitely use Dan's
solution for that problem.
