John, I've long wished for the ability to go from target back to source x-ref but the one-to-many nature of an x-ref marker defeats that. However... If you create a generated List of References file for your document, and limit it to only Cross-Refs, and make sure Generate Hyperlinks is checked in the LOR set-up dialog, you can have that list file open when doing your work and then hop to it and use its hyperlinks to get back to your sources for cross-refs. No need to set up any fancy formatting for the file, but such a file can be a great utility during the authoring process.
