Dan,

The Distiller Assistant of Acrobat 3.0x is not a driver and is not
a PPD. It is simply a conduit by which PostScript output by the driver
is force fed to Distiller 3.0x via what is effectively a "watched" disk
location (directory \DISTASST.PS on each mapped volume). With Acrobat 3.0x,
the AdobePS 4.2.4 (or greater) PostScript driver should be setup to use
the Distiller 3 PPD and print to the \DISTASST.PS port (or x:\DISTASST.PS,
where "x" is the letter of a mapped volume to which the user has write
access and enough space for a PostScript file). For better or worse, the
installer for Acrobat 3.0x never got that quite right. You need to do this
manually. But once it is setup correctly with the right driver
(not PSCRIPT.DRV), the correct PPD, and the correct port, it works like a
charm. Sorry if Adobe Tech Support didn't quite understand either the
problem you described to them and/or the full correct solution.

Acrobat 4's solution is quite a bit cleaner and is properly installed
by the Acrobat 4 setup program, totally replacing the Distiller Assistant.
