RE: FrameMaker- how to make it better...

I would add one thing to Steve's list:

When you find a plug-in you like, tell people about it! Tell people
what the program is, what it does, why you like it, and which
platforms it runs on. Include a web site if possible.

Without the mentions on the Frame lists, I would never have heard of
IXgen, Enhance, FrameScript, or Auto-Text. Now I would not willingly
work without them.

IXgen: http://www.pacifier.com/~franks Essential indexing and marker
  management tool.
Enhance: http://www.sandybrook.com Outlining tool, combining a Word-
like outlining system and drag-n-drop editing. Makes massive
re-arranging of text within documents a breeze.
FrameScript: http://www.frametools.com/framescr.htm Scripting
language you can use to automate all sorts of things.
Auto-Text: http://www.kagi.com/SPSoftware Easy-to-use autotext,
where two keystrokes can add anything from a table to a graphic
with caption to a long string of plain text into your doc.

Screen Capture Pro: http://www.creativesoftworx.com Not a plug-in,
per se, but another essential tool. Incredibly flexible screen
capture program with paint and draw tools. VERY inexpensive AND
  easy to use!

(Thanks to Frank S., David L., Frank E., and Steve K. -- and the
people who work with them.)
