When I worked at Apple, I was involved in several of the email lists (all running on mailman). One of the largest email lists has over 10,000 people on it, and we never had any problems with it. Since I had to be the admin on this account I would have to go in every once and a while and remove accounts that continued to bounce, but other than routine maintenance such as that, we had no problems with mailman. 

As far as the other objections go, I'm too new (only been on this list over a year) to comment on them, but so long as it works I'm OK with it.
