Thread-topic: Technical solution for producing IETM
Hi, We have been asked to present a solution for delivering system description, operation and maintenance manuals as IETMs according to CALS Class 4 and subcontractor manuals as IETMS according to CALS Class 3, based on the DocBook DTD and XML. Text, pictures and drawings shall be delivered in one or some of the following digital formats: XML, jpg, gif, tif, png or pdf. Big drawings (A0-A1) shall be shown as miniatures and allow zooming in a separate window. From this solution it shall be possible to produce manuals in pdf-format and in HTML-format via XSLT. Our production of manuals have so far been based on using FrameMaker (unstructured). As we have no previous experience in this field, we are looking for the technical solution required to produce these IETMS. The initial questions are: - What components must this solution include and what are their role in the production process? - Which approach is best for establishing an IETM production solution, build one from scratch or by one? - Which knowledge is required for technical authors to contribute in producing IETMs? There are probably many other topics to consider. I hope some of you have experience in this field and are willing to share your experience.
