Hedley, 1) You can easily round-trip instances of xrefs, preserving the format used, provided that import uses a template that defines the format. If you want format definitions to be represented in the XML, you'll need an FDK client to handle both import and export. 2) User variables are exported as entity references. FM will declare the entity correctly as long as the variable definition does not include character formats or less-than or greater than characters. You can use the FDK to support such variables if needed. 3) It take the FDK to represent conditional text usage in XML or SGML.
