These limits are not specified anywhere, but a little testing and
extrapolation of the information that is available yields the
following:
* All printable characters are allowed, i.e. any characters that
  you can enter through the keyboard, including the special
  notations like "\TM" and "\xHH".
* The tag is space- and case-sensitive.
* The number of allowed characters is very large, more than 100
  and probably at least 255.

All format tags probably have the same limitations. There is no
technical reason for a paragraph tag to be more restricted than a
flow tag, for instance. When looking at MIF, tags are stored in
the same way, so they should be implemented uniformly.

You probably refer to the "series label" for autonumbering series.
This is actually documented:
"A series label consists of any single printable character
 followed by a colon".
