Limits on Flow Tags?

Couldn't find an answer to this in the help files, or in Thomas 
Neuberger's very helpful book:

What are the limits on flow tags? I. e., number of characters 
permitted, and *which* characters? (Only UC? Only alphanumeric?)

I would also be interested in the limits on other tags, incl. 
autonumbering as well.


I have a vague memory of a useful discussion (by Fred Ridder?) 
regarding the limits on tags for autonumbering and thought I had 
saved it, but can't find it now.
