Hedley did the right thing to start by defining the terminology, but unfortunately it differs from the way FrameMaker (and Fiona) use the terms. Regardless which is thought of as more logical, you're better off using FM's terminology, since it's also reflected in the user interface. For both cross-references and text insets, FM use the term "source" for the document being referenced or imported, not the document in which you insert the cross-reference or text inset. You can see this in the Cross-Reference and Import Text Flow by Reference dialogs.
