RE: SVG

We've been closely watching SVG for quite some time, desperately searching for a tool that supports 100% coming-or-going round-tripping between SVG and EPS. From the point of view of multilingual publishing, SVG opens the door to fully automated graphic callout translations.

Using perl, it's easy to grab the text from the callouts, feed it to Trados or a similar translation memory engine, and then replace the original callouts with the language-appropriate Trados output.

When I think back to my early Frame years, when I worked as a "typesetter" reformatting translated documents for a translation house, I almost feel guilty about the untold hours I was paid to resize text frames within graphic anchored frames to make other languages look pretty. Page true translation was somehow seen as important and we were wildly encouraged to change point size, leading, or anything else just to make the same words fit on the same page. I felt sorry for their Dutch and German readers.

Man, I'm gonna lose lurker status if I don't shaddap soon.

Have a good weekend,
Jason
