Further to Dov Isaacs' reply:

- The problem is most visible when the PDF is viewed with Acrobat/Reader 5,
regardless of whether Distiller 3, 4 or 5 were used to distill the PDF.
Using Acrobat Distiller 4.x does not fix the problem; see illustration in
http://www.microtype.com/images/BoxesInBmks.gif (three images).

- With Acrobat/Reader 4, all special spaces/hyphens are shown as spaces.
This is fine with non-breaking spaces, but undesirable with non-breaking
hyphens, discretionary hyphens and suppress hyphenation characters.
