Sometimes it can help to temporarily use the extension ".fm6" for FM6 files
and associate that with the FM6 application. Of course you may want to
rename those files when you've converted completely to FM6, but at least
you're helped by the rename feature in FM6 books.

This is not what you want to hear, but... "don't use MS" :-)
On both Mac and UNIX you can open applications not controlled by file
extensions. This is substantially easier on Mac than on UNIX. Mac has
its "creator" feature, UNIX has its "magic" feature. With MS Windows 
you're stuck with file extension mappings.
