Subject: RE: Problems with 8550 drivers (follow on to Weird Adobe PDF docs)

I don't think HP has it right yet! Since purchasing our HP 8550 MFP last August, we too have experienced "anomalies." I've spent hours with HP Tech Support at various levels in both the hardware and software groups without getting any closer to an answer. (One suggested that I use something other than FrameMaker, which he had never heard of.) This is the problem in a nutshell: When I use the Postscript driver(not the PCL driver), only the first frame (graphic) on a any given page prints (subsequent frames are blank). This happens regardless of the size of the file (from 1 page to 100's) or the complexity of the graphics in the first or subsequent frames. The outcome is 100% consistent. The workaround is to use the PCL driver (which has other problems) or to distill the file and print from the PDF file. By the way, we are on FrameMaker 6.0, and the HP is on an NT network. We have the latest driver (and I've downloaded and installed various prior versions). Has anybody run into this problem? Or are we the only ones using an HP 8550? -----Original Message----- From: Dov Isaacs [mailto:isaacs@Adobe.COM] Sent: Thursday, May 03, 2001 2:01 PM To: framers@frameusers.com; framers@omsys.com Cc: thomas.michanek@iar.se Subject: Re: Weird Adobe PDF docs Thomas, Nothing is wrong with the document, nothing is wrong with Windows 2000 SP1, nothing is wrong with Acrobat. What is wrong is the "LaserJet 4050". The PDF file in question was created by exporting PDF from InDesign. The PDF exported by InDesign uses CID-encoded Type 1 and Type 42 fonts. Recent vintage Hewlett-Packard LaserJets (all four digit number versions except the 8500 and 8550 color devices which use EFI RIPs with Adobe PostScript 3) use an "emulation" of PostScript Level 2 that has had its share of "anomalies" including problems with CID-encoded fonts. Supposedly, these problems have been fixed with the LaserJet 4100. We have heard from some end-users, but cannot independently verify this, that if you run into these problems and get the "right" folk at Hewlett-Packard Technical Support, they will ship you an upgraded set of ROMs that contain the fixes for older LaserJet 4xxx, 5xxx, 80xx, and 81xx models. You might need to go through a few levels of HP Tech Support before you reach someone who (a) understands this problem and (b) is able and willing to authorize the update for you. - Dov At 5/3/2001 10:16 AM, Thomas Michanek wrote: >I have strange print-out problems with some PDF files >available from Adobe.
