spell checker

Hi,
I hope someone could please advise me.
I'm using FrameMaker v. 5.6.
My spell checker does not work.
It starts checking and reports Spelling ok, even when I know there are
blatant  errors, that it has not picked up.
I urgently need some suggestions as to what the problem may be and how to
fix it, as my own spelling is atrocious and my typing not much better.
