I vaguely remember this happening. I think an one thing you can do is to just move the images to a different directory. When Frame opens it will ask you where the image files are. At that point you can select the new GIF image and go on. The problem is that you have to do this for each graphic file in the whole document, but at least you don't have to re import them all. I think that I would first try to change them all in the MIF file and see what happened. If that caused problems then move the image files and try opening the same mif file up again. If that didn't work, then I would move the image files and open an original copy and see what happened.
