Trying to avoid parallel sets of Par Tags for chapters and appendices

I have a ChapHead tag with a numbering counter set as C:<n>< =0> and a Head2
with a numbering counter of C:<n>.<n+>. This sets up a numbering sequence
of

4	My holiday
4.1	Packing up
4.2	Catching the train

Now I want an AppdxHead tag with a numbering counter of C:<A>< =0> but wish
to reuse Head2, Head3, etc. to get

A	Snakes of North Queensland
A.1	Death adder
A.2	Death subtractor

But if Head2 has a counter of C:<n>.<n+> this will be

A	Snakes of North Queensland
1.1	Death adder
2.2	Death subtractor

Is there any **undocumented** building block that will automatically repeat
the previous value, no matter whether numeric, cap alpha, lower alpha, cap
roman, or lower roman? For example, something like C:<?>.<n+> or C:<*>.<n+>
(these don't work, of course).

Or will a parallel set of AppdxHead, AppdxHead2, AppdxHead3, AppdxFigHead,
and AppdxTableHead need to be concocted?
