The front matter pages > do not use any master pages. Thanks. No. Page numbering is controlled at the file level. You need to use FM's "book/chapter" metaphor, not fight it. Separate files for frontmatter, TOC, chapters, and index are cumbersome only if you're accustomed to, and enamored of, wrestling with Word's section breaks. ;-) BTW, regarding master pages, I assume you meant that the frontmatter pages don't use any custom master pages, just the default Left/Right. If you actually set Master Page = None and manually control the layout (text frame placement, header/footer, etc.) -- well, that strikes me as cumbersome.
