We tried doing this off the bat.....

AHA!  We added a generated LIST, not a generated INDEX.

The generated list we got was a discouraging (and long) list of marker
numbers and pages.  It was of no use, and we gave up on that approach.

I followed your procedure on a test document and it worked just fine (my
conditional text was set to show).

So for the future, we know that there is a difference between Generated List
and Generated Index.  I didn't even think that Generated Index would do
anything other than generate an index of list markers....

So you learn something every day!

By this time, of course, the person with those ugly docs has clicked away
all the conditional text, so THAT isn't a problem any more.
