FDK compilers for Unix

Hi,

I believed that the sun c compiler was required for compiling FDK programs, 
but recently I heard rumors that thats not the case. Is it also possible to 
use a different compiler (GNU) and what setting do I need to consider in 
that case.

Any help/tips/pointers are appreciated.
