Use MIF!!  That's FrameMaker's own interchange format, and it preserves
everything in the Frame document as is.  Don't even consider RTF.  <g>

Any usage of new 6.0 features will be ignored in 5.5.6.  Mostly this
won't matter.  But there is one glaring exception: the autonumbering.
Since 6.0 has introduced new system variables <$chapnum> and <$volnum>
into the scheme, your autonumbers will be hosed in 5.5.6 if you used 
those variables.  

It's not clear if it's still possible to use the old methods in 6.0, 
if you need to maintain compatibility with a 5.5.6 file base.  Perhaps
Ed Malick in Framemaker QA, who kindly summarized these features in
posts on May 12 and 15 under the subject "Chapter numbering hints in 
FM 6.0" (reposted to the lists by Lee Richardson and Tom Neuburger),
could comment about this point...
