Problem solved! Shlomo's answer -- that it might be related to insufficient disk space -- eventually got us thinking in the right direction. It was a ClearCase problem: conflcts between project views, item ownership, and task privileges. (email me if you're interested in the ugly details) So... anyone got a good doc management program for Linux?
