RE: Do I Want Linux?

Unless you know (and enjoy learning) a bit about the inner working
of your 'information appliances', the most obvious advantages of
Linux and the *BSDs are price, performance, and stability.

Professional support has recently become available, so that is not
an issue anymore (but comes at a price, of course). Most any
'enterprise' application (e.g. database systems) is available,
while there's still only a small selection of desktop applications
(compared to what's available for Windows and MacOS).

The real advantage, IMHO, is that these operating systems are
open source and come with huge collections of mature system
management and development tools. I find a Linux box to be a lot
easier to manage than either MacOS or Windows NT, because nothing
is hidden, everything is meant to be managed, and the tools are
available.

If you are satisfied to live within the confines of your favourite
applications, stay there. If you need or want just a bit more
responsibility, investigate Linux and the other open source *nix
clones.

Kind regards,
Peter Ring
