Expanded leadered tab control desired

[Copies to Frank Stearns & Steve Kubis for their input -- and potential
product development?]

Framers,

Problem: Leadered tabs (right aligned) do not seem to have any controls
available for

  a) amount of space before before the leadering and
       after the leadering.

  b) minimum quantity of leader dots.

Platform: FM 556 Win95 (and have IXGen 5.5e)

In the process of putting together a large index, my long-festering
annoyance with FM's leadered tabs has come to a head.

Depending upon the content of the line containing the right-aligned
leadered tab, there may be 0 [okay], 1 or 2 [NOT okay], or 3 or more
leader dots. For example:

    Subject Text . 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 123

Note the single "." after the word "Text". It really looks bad.

Other times, the leader dots are jammed hard against either or both the
"Subject Text" or the page numbers. (This is hard to illustrate in an
email.

    DESIRED:
    Subject Text ........ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

    BUT OFTEN GET:
    Subject Text........1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Note: If you add extra space in the IndexIX item on the reference
page (thus " <pagenum>") then you will get two spaces between every
page number, NOT an extra space before after the leadering.

These may be a "minor" typographical issue, but then that is the job we
are expected to do. (We make BOOKS, not documentation.)

Any help (or products) will be most appreciated.

Jay
