Re: Generating a TOC for Documents in a Book

Barb -

| I think I must be losing my mind. The other day I generated a TOC for a set
| of 5 documents in a book. Had some trouble, but basically got one created.
| Today I wanted to start all over with it since the formatting wasn't quite
| right and I figured I had done too many "non-standard" things to create it
| in the first place (which I couldn't even begin to enumerate now). But now
| I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to generate the thing.
|
| If I have the book file open, I don't get a File option for Generate/Book
| (only one for Generate/Update) so I can't make a TOC from there. If I have
| one or several (or all) of the document files open, I get a Generate/Book
| option and I can generate a TOC, but it generates only for the active
| document. If I generate with the old TOC open, I get basically nothing in
| the new TOC (since the paragraph styles used to create the TOC don't exist
| in the TOC itself).
|
| HELP! What ever am I missing here?? Online help and the user guide have
| been no help. Does anyone out there have a clue?

The key in a BOOK is that you ADD a generated file (ToC, Index, . . . ),
perform whatever setup is needed (like specifying which para tags to include
in the TOC) and then Generate/Update to populate it.

In a FILE, you indeed use the Generate/Book to create a ToC for the one file
only.

This is in the User Guide, in Chapter 14 (pgs 337-339 in my FM 5.5 copy),
but its rather difficult to locate via the index, as it is described under:

Generated Files in Books
	adding	337-339

and not under the "Books" nor "Table of Contents" entries.

I hope this helps.
