Although many of their basic functions are similar, each has distinct strengths to benefit different types of users. FrameMaker Overview FrameMaker is the standard publishing tool for long, content-driven, highly structured documents that are primarily based on text, such as books, manufacturer's hardware and software manuals, catalogs, scientific and technical reports, and new feature and product specifications. FrameMaker is also ideal for authoring frequently updated documents, such as printed and on-line product specifications, directories, service and repair guides, and price lists, as well as databases with real-time content retrieval (in conjunction with FrameViewer). FrameMaker documents typically contain consistent layouts, technical data, tables, charts, graphs, images, and colors. Once users establish a structure, FrameMaker automatically formats the document. Individual pages and elements do not require additional attention. Content is actually created and maintained in FrameMaker, and enhanced by images and graphics that are often imported from other applications. Documents are distributed not only in print, but electronically via FrameViewer, on CD-ROM, in PDF, or as HTML on the Web. InDesign Overview InDesign 1.0 is a new, state-of-the-art page layout application that delivers unprecedented creative freedom, productivity, and precision. Created for high-end graphic designers, production artists, and prepress professionals, InDesign provides a powerful new set of tools, such as clipping path support, nested text and graphics frames, and hierarchical master pages. Plus, InDesign includes unprecedented typography features, including single-line and multi-line composition engines, extensive kerning controls, and character-based styles. InDesign works seamlessly with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, to provide a single, integrated design environment. Additionally, InDesign can open QuarkXPress and PageMaker files. For more detailed information on InDesign 1.0, see "InDesign at a Glance or "New Product Overview," or visit Adobe's Web site at http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/indesign/main.html.
