Japanese PDFs -- again

After much fussing about last month, we managed to set up a Win95-J machine
to produce clean, tight, Japanese PDFs which were viewable, searchable,
printable and readable on Reader 4 (with J fonts). Much celebration.

But (isn't there always a but?), the machine started acting up and one of
our techo's decided unilaterally to re-install Win95-J.

Now we can't get any of the original settings to work (following all of the
methode Dov instructions -- \distasst.ps, 4.2J driver, download all TT,
etc).

The result, following Dov fully, gives great graphics and crop marks -- but
no J fonts. The Distiller warning line is:
%%[Warning: unsupported character set ordering in /MS 明朝,Italic.]

(where "/MS 明朝," = the Mincho typeface, the only one used)

Can get output, using other drivers and a lot of fiddling, but the PDF is
far too big (and we're talking 600-800pp books), the text is virtually
unreadable on-screen, and it can't be searched nor can jumps be used.

Have also tried the latest (English only) PS 4.3 driver, with similar
results (although it did tell us the name of the missing typeface).

Meantime, there is a hunt on to find a copy of the original Win95-J CD.

Once again, I'm in your hands, mateys
