We haven't done a lot of colour material, but have not had problems with
the printer when we have.

I'm assuming you have a copy of Adobe Illustrator kicking around.  It has
some interesting colour printing in it.  Take in a copy of the manual and
crack it open to the colophon page.  Let the printer read it.
