Many thanks to those of you who responded to my question. As a summery, the majority (90%) suggested the use of the third party plug-in IXgen (more information at http://www.pacifier.com/~franks/). This program can create index markers from a paragraph tag and use the text in the para tag as the marker text. It also works for character tags I am told. Thanks to Rick, Art Campbell, Carolyn Stallard, Ananda Banttari, and of course Frank Stearns. I had seen this product in passing before and more recently in a seminar and was already considering recommending it for use in my department. This pretty much clinches it. The other solution suggested by Alex Bilsland is to create a para tag unique to the part number and generate a list of that tag, import to a table and sort. Without the plug-in, this would have been my solution as well. Thanks again for your help.
