Thanks for all of your very helpful responses. It appears the following are factors: - Novell networks seem to have this problem, but not NT networks - The 8.3 file naming restriction exacerbates the problem - It isn't enough to just save a file with a short filename. We also must set FM Preferences to Windows 3.1 file naming standards. I didn't check, but this could also be because FM was trying to save a backup file without Windows 3.1 preferences set. - Several users report similar problems with Corel Draw and other apps using Novell Networks One user also reported an almost identical problem following installation of a new virus checker. Our situation here is nearly identical, but may be a coincidence. -Steve Murphy ------------- I haven't had this problem myself, but two of my coworkers have: They can work okay on their local drives (Windows 95), but when they try to save to the network, they get an error: "Cannot lock file, your work may conflict with other users" (if they have network file locking set) or: "Cannot open file for Writing" (if file locking is NOT set) This ONLY happens with FrameMaker. Anyone run into this? Any ideas? Our network people say only "It's a FrameMaker Problem." [I know, I've used up my quota of problems today...] Steve Murphy Senior Documentation Specialist Adobe Certified Expert/FrameMaker, Acrobat SOFTWORKS, Inc. 5845 Richmond Highway Alexandria, VA 22303 USA (703) 317-8879 smurphy@softworkscc.com ** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@omsys.com ** ** with "unsubscribe framers" (no quotes) in the body. **
