Re: ellipsis

Robert Bringhurst's The Elements of Typographic Style says "Use ellipses
that fit the font"
(Page 80, Paragraph 5.2.7 )

To paraphrase, he says that some typefaces look good with a single
character (built into the typeface) ellipses and some do not. Also, the
size of the typface may dictate the use. Smaller typefaces, at or below 8
pt., need extra space between the dots. He cites the Chicago Manual of
Style prescription of adding thick spaces (M/3) between the dots, but
Bringhurst calls this "another Victorian eccentricity."

>If it's true, as Roger states, that "more than one person of my
acquaintance has commented that the single-character condensed ellipsis is
one of those items that characterize amateur typesetting", then those
acquaintances have not really looked very closely and really don't know
whereof they speak. I can't imagine what they are thinking about. The
fact is that the ellipsis character is in no way condensed in
proportionally spaced type. In fact the converse is true!
