RE: Numbering errors when generating books

I may have this wrong, but I believe every time you generate a book, you are
temporarily setting the numbering properties of the individual files to
those specified in the book. That is, if you went into the file that is
Chapter 3 in a given book and checked the document properties, you'd see
that the chapter number was set to 3. If you now include that same file in a
different book, where it's not the third but the second chapter, the first
time you generate that book you're applying numbering properties from the
book that are not consistent with the most recently set properties within
the file.

This isn't usually a problem, since the properties set in the book are
usually the ones you want, and they override those in the file by default,
but it's not unreasonable for Frame to warn you it's happening. "It's a
feature, not a bug."

As long as your multiple books use the files in different ways -- and they
must, or why have different books in the first place? -- I'm not sure I see
a way around it... unless, as others have suggested, there's a way to turn
the warning feature off.

It's exactly what we do. We generate each book using the Edit menu.
But none of the shared files have distinct numbering properties. All the
settings are identical.
So why does FrameMaker tells the contrary ?
We want to establish a pre-set generation properties, in order to simplify
FrameScript book generation automation.
So we don't want to have to re-set each book one after the other.

This is a very basic question, but you didn't mention it in your
description, so:

You are updating each book by clicking the Update icon in the book file
(or the Edit menu) each time you build the book, aren't you? And when you
do that, the Update Numbering checkbox is activated?

Also, if you're working with multiple books containing the shared files at
the
same time... don't -- the changes or updates you make in one will affect
the second, and vise versa. If you're going to use shared files, build one
book all the way to completion before working in the second and modifying
the settings of the shared file(s).
