Re: hidden definitions/uses of missing fonts

I think you're still missing the point here.

You're right; the situation is more complex than I thought. I'm grateful to you for pointing out my error, because I've labored under the misconception, which you've now cleared up, for years.

I don't think I entirely missed the point, however, since I meant to explain why what appeared not to work for Ananda yesterday worked today, and my explanation of that was accurate: after the setting for "Remember..." is changed, the files with missing font names in them need to be opened and saved not once, but twice, to get rid of the "Missing font names" alert. It was after that explanation that I went wrong, as follows.

The "Remember..." setting
is *not* saved as part of any file except maker.ini (or its equivalent
on other platforms). In other words, that item is *only* a system-
level preference and not a file-level property. Unless you change
the setting after you launch FrameMaker, whatever is specified in
maker.ini will apply for *every* file you open in that session.

This is all true.

If you
change the setting, that changed setting will apply to every file
you open subsequently, and the setting itself will be saved into
maker.ini upon exiting.

Sort-of-true, and that sort-of is how my misconception arose. The setting will only be saved if a file is saved after the setting has been changed. Notably, if you open an empty file with the setting "on" (=remember), change only that preference to "off" (=do not remember), then look at the "Save" menu item, the "Save" menu item will be grayed-out and inaccessible (on Solaris, anyhow). Huh. Thus, it is perfectly feasible to close the file without saving the "Remember" preference, and without being alerted to save, so when you next open a file (any file, as Fred and Richard pointed out), the "Remember" preference will be unchanged. This is how my misconception arose, via my imperfect testing procedure.

The situation as it stands is likely to lead to confusion, and especially with respect to books, where the "Save" step may be omitted for multiple files without alerts if _only_ the "Remember" preference setting is changed for the book (and files).
