Re: forcing soft returns in index markers?

Use TocBreaker from Chris Despopoulos. (TOC is a red herring -- it'll work on any generated file.) Generate your index, add the manual returns, save them with TOCBreaker (File > Utilities), then reapply after any regeneration.
