Try the undocumented shortcut "Esc g U" (lowercase g, uppercase U)
To quote Lee Richardson at Adobe:

"This was added in one of the 5.5.x releases to ungroup CGM graphics
 into editable FrameVector images. It's fairly specific, and the engineer
 that did the work waffled sufficiently about implementation completeness
 that we decided not to document it. Meaning- if it works in your
 particular case, cool, if not..."
