Hi,

We also try to keep file sizes small, and use the rules:

 - if line art, use PNG (instead of gif) or SVG (preferred)
 - if photos, use JPG

Particularly the SVG files are very small, and they allow zooming, but 
require a plugin SVGviewer.

The only GIFs we still use are our 2-bit GIFs of our safety warnings
which are indexed to use colors red,black,white (therefore only need 
2 bits=4 colors).
