FM+SGML has a built-in API named FmDispatcher, which, presumably, will also be in FM 7.0. One use of this API is to create a FrameMaker palette containing sets of special characters. The palette has representations of each character, with a message-type hypertext link that is sent to FmDispatcher. The palette can be used with both structured and unstructured docs. I have an article describing this approach at: www.microtype.com/ Click on the resources link, and go to Dan Emory's Articles. You'll find it there.
