RE: Can Frame be taught what column # text is in?

Thanks for the idea, Jim. I think that would work for Xrefs, but only if the
text didn't flow/change/move.

Anyhow, further research makes me think what I really want is a "custom
system variable." I would also like to be able to generate a list of markers
and include the column numbers in that list. The only way I can think of
doing that is with a system variable. I don't think it's possible to make
system variables (otherwise they'd be USER variables, I know, I know).

Marcus suggested (offline ... thanks, Marcus) that the FDK could determine
the column number, but I've looked at FO_SubCol and can't find anything that
would return the column number. Maybe I'm not thinking with the proper
FDK-mindset (it has been a few years since I did any FDK work), though.

Any further thoughts?

How about...

Create a paratag called ColNum and configure it with white text so it isn't
visible in the doc. Where you need to make the Xref, insert that paratag and
enter the column number. Then create a cross reference format like "column
<$paratext[ColNum]> on page <$pagenum>".

I'd like to cross-reference a paragraph tag by pagenum and columnnum (in a
five column, directory-like layout). I don't think the columnnum component
exists, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place. Has anyone found this?
If not, is anyone aware of a workaround or third-party tool that would
permit cross referencing this way?

Thanks.
