Following what David posted, I have to partially agree. An XML/SGML solution is in fact what we use here. The FM interface is customised to validate and save as SGML in one step so the resultant SGML file can be checked into a database. After posting and thinking about what I said, I also thought of the SGML/XML approach as being the same as stripping down FM MIF. However, I think it's a fallacy to say that the SGML/XML approach is easier or more efficient. It certainly doesn't require less coding or scripting to control output and storage than the stripped MIF method proposed. I'd even venture to say that for the majority the stripped MIF is much easier to implement. It deals with known issues and formatting controls. No need to learn DTDs, EDDs, Templates, Read/Write Rules, and all the other things associated with SGML/XML workflows. Eric L.
