Ultimately, I did what Jane Post suggested. In Word, select Tools>Templates and Add-Ins. What templates are listed?? I have PDFMaker.dot and PDFMakerA.dot along with R0B0HELP.DLL. AHDLookup.dot was the American Heritage Dictionary template that caused my Acrobat menu to never be displayed (it would flicker when Word was loaded and disappear). PDFMaker.dot seems to control the display of the Acrobat icons. I'm not quite sure what PDFMakerA.dot does. I also did what Jim Snowden suggested. Checked that Word would find PDFMaker.dot in C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Office\Office\Startup and that path agreed with Tool, Options, File Location tab and check the "Startup" value. The Acrobat icons still resisted my efforts. The one thing that finally dawned on me was that after re-installing Acrobat 5 a few times, I had failed to run the 5.0.5 Update. I have done that again and the icons are back. Now whether they will stay or not remains the question. We'll see. Thanks for all your suggestions.
