Here's the situation (FM 5.5.6): Books of training materials consisting of a number of units. Each unit may or may not be subdivided into a number of lessons. Each Page requires the following information in the header: SECTION TITLE Unit #: UNIT TITLE Lesson #: LESSON TITLE Each footer requires the following page numbering: Unit # Lesson #-# Currently the header is a separate flow, with all information entered on the body pages. This requires checking before publication and seems to be needlessly tedious (empty headers need filled or extra ones must be deleted). The page number is obtained by using a combination of Running H/F and the page number variable. Running H/F1 uses unit and lesson, and Running H/F2 uses unit only. While the page number variable could be modified, it would render it impossible to import variables over all documents in a book (which includes title pages, front matter, units, lessons, and appendices). A separate template is used for lessons and units. And did I mention the unit and lessons are only ever named (and numbered) in the header? So units must increment the unit count, first lessons must increment unit count and reset lesson count, and subsequent lessons must keep the same unit number and increase the lesson number. The current templates work, but I'm sure there's an easier way. Any suggestions I could try? Eric L.
