If your document properties (Format | Document | Text Options... Smart Spaces ON are set to use Smart Spaces, FrameMaker will NOT let you type more than one space in a row. It also automatically corrects any instances of multiple spaces in text at the time you make a change to that text. I assume that you have Smart Spaces turned on and that therefore FrameMaker is deleting any excess spaces in your cross-reference text. (It will also query any instance of multiple spaces in your text during spelling checks and give you the option to correct all future instances automatically.) In general, the way I deal with multiple spaces and other code nonsense in spelling checks is to use a paragraph tag named "Code" or some such, and set its default font properties to use Dictionary = None. This setting (available for character tags as well as paragraph tags) *might* solve your problem, but I believe you would need to turn off Smart Spaces in your documents and use spelling checks to correct any multiple spaces that creep in during writing/editing. Then you can protect your x-refs by creating a character tag set to "As Is" but with Dictionary = None and apply it to the cross-reference format(s) in which you need to type multiple spaces. Of course if you're already using a character tag to format these X-refs, just change it to incorporate the Dictionary = None setting. Good luck!
